Gerry Valois started Western Onion in 1993 to fill an underserved segment of the onion industry. His main focus was to provide food processors nationwide with large quantities of high quality Spring and early Summer sweet onions. These onions could be produced and supplied on a daily basis from Southern California, three full months prior to the Northwest region beginning its sweet onion season. With Southern California’s large and varied growing regions, we can supply our customers with an uninterrupted supply of fresh onions from mid-April through October. If needed, we have had product in the field well into December. Our growing areas in California include the Imperial, San Joaquín, Antelope, Cuyama, and Salinas valleys. We have also added the Salt River valley in Arizona.
Over the years, our provided services have expanded through partnerships to include the import and distribution of red onion seed with Tasman Seed Co., organic fertilizer under the Chamae label, transportation with Western Truck and Logistics, specialty vegetable import and distribution with PanAmerican farms, and the sale of specialized mechanical field bin/box filling trailers form Larrington Trailers UK. With our twenty two years of sweet onion mechanical harvest experience, we have also expanded into custom mechanical harvest work, due to our industries challenges with labor supply and its associated high costs. In addition, Western Onion offers consulting services to those switching from hand to mechanical harvest.
